The Arc Impact Since 1950 people with disabilities and their families have been placing their trust with the St Louis Arc Today the St Louis Arc serves more than 4 500 children teens and adults with autism spectrum disorders Down syndrome intellectual and other developmental disabilities From in person direct care to virtual programs we are proud of the difference we make in people s lives and are excited to share our impact through this Report to the Community Persistence Pays Off The employment team acted as cheerleader and coach They taught me not to give up Claire When Claire began her journey with Employment Services she was happily working as a summer camp counselor and volunteering for a senior citizens program These roles were a perfect outlet for Claire who excelled at helping others But at age 22 her goal was full time employment She had worked hard to build her skills and her resume was awesome She d volunteered with Neighborhood Experiences completed an internship with Arc s Leisure Services department mentoring teens and attended college at Missouri State Working with her career consultant Claire spent time finding applying and interviewing for jobs Even with a network of contacts a full time job offer eluded her I was job searching throughout the pandemic and it was definitely stressful said Claire Because she doesn t drive Claire limited her initial search to places near her home Many times Claire made it through first round interviews To expand her opportunities Claire s career consultant encouraged her to branch out into other employment areas including working with younger children At the same time Arc s Assistant Director of Employment Services Tom Hutson was building a connection with Flance Early Learning Center in North City Tom spoke with Claire s job coach and despite the transportation challenges they believed Flance offered an opportunity for Claire to take the next step Claire Flance said Hutson Arc s Employment Services team then worked with Claire to develop a transportation plan and secure financial assistance from Productive Living Board for transportation expenses The team discussed options with Claire and after careful consideration Claire applied for a job as an Early Learning Assistant at Flance Due to strict rules surrounding COVID safety in the school on site job coaching was not an option Claire worked together with her team to create a virtual coaching strategy as she began her new job and Claire says Hutson and her current job coach Ciara have made a huge impact on her success What I enjoy most about Arc is how they work to fit my needs says Claire who continues to receive retention support from her job coach The staff here ask what I want and what I need she said If it wasn t for the Arc making connections I would have never heard of Flance During a virtual Zoom interview Claire impressed the Flance staff She came prepared used the skills she d learned through her many Arc experiences and by the end of the day was offered a full time job with When asked what advice she d give other young Arc participants Claire said You have awesome people here to support you Don t give up ask lots of questions and know they are here for you as long as it takes Thriving With A Circle of Support Meeting Ron today one would never guess he came to the Arc sixteen years ago as a shy quiet young man struggling to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle In 2006 Ron s family connected with the Arc so that he might have meaningful activities to fill his day Since then Ron has gone through many life transitions developed close relationships and hobbies and is on track for a healthier life Ron s a very friendly easy going guy who enjoys arts and crafts and working with his hands says Shannon Porter who coordinates the Community Engagement CE program Ron attends Sensing that Ron was reserved his CE support team took things slow at first allowing Ron to warm up to the program His team noticed he enjoyed activities where he was able to use his hands so they arranged those kinds of experiences for him He enjoyed volunteering for the St Louis Food Bank and community activities like making litter boxes for the Humane Society Through CE Ron was also able to build physical activity into his routine through walking in the community Ron s new experiences were his first steps toward building his confidence and opening up As Ron s mother got older Ron moved into a home supported by the Arc s Community Residential team To ease his transition the residential staff supported Ron in maintaining aspects of his regular routine including attending bowling and CE and returning to his mother s home each month for an overnight visit In the beginning Ron struggled to connect with his housemates shared Timothy Gantner Support Manager in Ron s home The residential staff practiced various communication techniques including notepads and basic American Sign Language for Ron and his housemates As Ron s communication needs were met he naturally began building relationships with others in his home Staff also began encouraging Ron to make healthier choices in his life Ron s involvement in Walking Club and enjoyment of Arc Dances helped encourage him to increase his activity levels while Arc s cooking classes helped him learn to make healthier meals In 2019 Arc piloted a nutrition program through which Ron met Alysha Arc s Nutrition Center chef Alysha quickly noticed Ron s interest and aptitude for cooking She learned that cooking had been a large part of his relationship with his family so she found ways to include and empower Ron while preparing meals She had him help prepare snacks and encouraged him to make placemats that illustrated what kinds of foods he liked to eat that week Alysha s new meal plans added more vegetables and fiber to Ron s diet and she made healthier versions of the favorite snacks he d enjoyed and cooked with his mom Today Ron continues to be active and engaged Consistent high quality support has helped him build his confidence and communication skills Having lost 200 pounds so far Ron finds it easier to participate in interesting activities with his friends With a circle of support around him Ron and his housemate vacationed in Branson MO this year The trip provided time with friends and opportunities for some of Ron s favorite activities They stayed at a resort where they were able to fish swim and play mini golf all fun activities for a meaningful life Ron
